Pearl Harbor National Monument

On December 7, 1941 the Battleship Arizona was sunk during a surprise attack by the Japanese navy. Our first official stop in Hawaii was to the national monument, pictured right, which sits atop the sunken vessel. After an excellent but short film about the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor, a boat ferried us over to the battleship and monument structure. It was a very solemn and moving event.
Suprisingly, there is an estimated 500,000 gallons of fuel oil still contained within the ship. After 60 years, the Arizona continues to leak out approximately 1-2 quarts of this oil per day. When the water is still, you can see these droplets rise to the surface above the hull. These last two pictures show the oil droplets expelled from the Arizona and a section of the battleship near the surface of the bay.
